(NOTE: Makoto Matou is a sexswapped version of Shinji Matou, so there is a combination of all routes + the Fate/Stay Night manga involved in the AU history with other select changes.)
Makoto Matou is a product of the Matou family, which was once well-known for their talents in magecraft. Over time, however, the Matou blood had thinned until no heir could were born with magic circuits. Both Makoto and her father, Byakuya were born with dismal ability, making them veritable "black sheep" of the family. They are shunned by her "uncle" Zouken, the family head, and Makoto's mother (also Byakuya's wife) was executed for failing to produce an heir fit for magecraft, as she had been known to possess an "inheritor trait". Makoto does not remember her and only knows of her being described as "A useless woman" by Zouken. Byakuya took to relieving his grief with alcohol consumption, which left Makoto for most of her younger years to roam around the unfriendly Matou compound alone. This neglect during her vital formative years has done irreparable damage to her on a developmental level.
By age five she is sent to Europe to study abroad for several years, thus not being present for the Fourth Holy Grail War (the death of her uncle, Kariya.) or the murder of her mother.
Byakuya's brother, Kariya, who had been excommunicated the Matou home until the year Makoto left, was the last known family member with a true talent for magecraft. He is the only one who exchanged letters with Makoto while she was away, though these letters promptly stopped once he became involved in the war. When Makoto returns to Fuyuki, she learns that Zouken has adopted Sakura Tohsaka. First, she was delighted to have obtained a new sister, but as time went on she discovered that Sakura had been brought into the family as a new heir in Zouken's effort to continue the Matou bloodline. Jealous, Makoto instantly shuns her and sees her as direct competition, despite Sakura's magical ability to be far greater than her own. Sakura, out of pity and guilt, remains polite to Makoto despite her poor treatment. Their relationship only grows worse as they get older, with Makoto harshly ordering Sakura around at any given opportunity. When Byakuya passes away during her junior high years, Makoto realizes now that she is truly alone because Zouken is always training with Sakura.
Since a young age, Makoto has been obsessed with magecraft. Despite not being allowed into the Matou library, she sneaks in on a regular basis to read by candlelight for hours upon hours; sometimes even all night. This is where she learns of the Fifth Holy Grail War. Believing she has the foremost right to be the heir of the family, Makoto studies relentlessly even with knowing she has very little magical ability within her. From Kirei Kotomine she obtains The Book of The False Attendant and though she does not having a catalyst, she attempts to summon a Heroic Spirit to become her servant.
With intervening from the grail itself, Makoto summons the Heroic Spirit of Cecil Harvey, of the Lunarian Bloodline, a Saber class.
The Book of the False Attendant is a powerful tool and ultimately is rough on the user, as it extracts mana and amplifies it into spells. Though the spells are fairly weak compared to a practiced magus, using them can be physically damaging. Makoto doesn't produce mana at the same rate of an average magus (the average being 25 units, with Makoto's weak circuits she may produce 7 to 12 units, depending.) and thus her energy source is quickly depleted in battle. If she continues to use spells in spite of this, the book begins to damage her internally.
Even with the power of the Saber class, the prospects of Makoto actually winning The Fifth Holy Grail War are extremely dim. Eventually, her obsession and greed catch up with her and further warp her personality, making it difficult for her bond with Saber to progress. There are three possible routes and conclusions: Makoto exhausts all of her command seals with Saber, thus losing her. She is executed by Illyasviel Von Einzbern and Berserker. (Fate) Makoto loses Saber to Caster and her Rule Breaker. She is given Gilgamesh by Kirei Kotomine as a consolation, who in turn implants the heart of Illyasviel Von Einzbern within her. Makoto is rescued by Rin Tohsaka and ultimately survives, but what remained of her magical circuits is completely fried. She lives the rest of her life as a normal person and has a good relationship with her sister Sakura. (Unlimited Blade Works) Having exhausted her mana supply in battle, Makoto is separated from Saber as she takes shelter. Unexpectedly, she comes across Lancer who was scouting the competition. He is ordered to kill Makoto by Kirei Kotomine, but doesn't oblige until a command seal is implemented. With the knowledge that her sister has been murdered, Sakura becomes The Shadow. (Heaven's Feel)
Her wish for the grail was to obtain a true talent/ability for magecraft.
Personality:
• Makoto is very much a "princess type" character in appearance. She is impatient; domineering and doesn't hesitate to attempt to manipulate or intimidate others. Under the illusion of being in high social standing as a Matou, she uses her forced status as a way to place herself above others and will gladly play the role of the victim if things don't go her way. Even with her poor attitude and lack of filter, she has quite a few fans at school.
• Growing up alongside Sakura, who had such a natural affinity for magecraft, Makoto became extremely jealous of her. She put all of her energy not just into secretly studying magecraft for herself, but into making certain that she could surpass Sakura in every other way possible. She is very well read and very intelligent academically, while she is moderately talented in sports and art. (She is the vice-captain of the kyudo club.) Makoto is seen very much as an "all-rounder" in terms of her skills and the only class she has ever received a poor grade in was cooking. She has also gotten remarks from her instructors regarding her bad personality many times. Her obsession with being "The Best" at everything is all consuming and she will gladly throw away friendships for the sake of it. That being said, Makoto doesn't have many friends. The only person she considers to be her friend is Shirou, though recently things between them have been strained.
• Because Sakura spends so much time at Shirou's house lately, Makoto often entertains her fans, both male and female by treating them after school. She craves their attention and affection because of the cold situation at home.
• Despite being academically smart and rather calculating, Makoto is socially dumb. Just as she thinks she is highly manipulating and cunning, she is also easily manipulated and tricked. For the sake of positive attention she often trusts people who shouldn't be trusted.
• Makoto is vain; petty and rough despite her prim appearance. However, she truly thinks that she is a good person who is doing the right thing. Her moral compass is completely off and typically she sees nothing wrong with any action she takes to advance herself in any situation. She truly believes that she can't do anything wrong because she's built herself up that way. Once you've gotten to know her, it's very plain to see that she's both weak (physically and psychologically, easily cracking mentally when under pressure.) and a notorious faker.
• tl;dr Makoto is a brat with megalomaniacal tendencies who has the capacity to experience delusions of grandeur to turn situations in her favor. She's weak and scared and socially stunted, but wants to fight tooth and nail to get what she feels she deserves.
Abilities: She has very weak magic circuits that can't do much without an amplifier of some sort (ex: The Book of The False Attendant) and if she runs low on mana she becomes dizzy, disoriented and unfocused. Aside from that she has very good memory regarding information and retains what she's read exceptionally.
